The Master in Fashion Design aim is to bring closer trained professionals from different fields, not necessary related with design and communication, to the complex world of contemporary fashion.
The course provides a solid cultural base to understand fashion as a social system related to the historical evolution of styles, artistic movements and social, cultural and economic changes that influence society.
The course gives the necessary tools and knowledge to know and master the different phases in fashion production, from the creative idea to place a collection into market. The course training covers the whole creative process and emphasizes the communicative and strategic value of a collection in a brand framework.
This Master provides solid bases to approach the world of fashion from its multiple aspects. Students will experiment how a workshop functions, following the different phases of the process to create a clothing item through practical exercises and assessed by professionals. Knowledge about fashion system and related disciplines, complementary to designer’s work, will give students a integral vision to comprehend the complex process behind every fashion collection, as well as the production for clothing items.
The course is planned with first introductory block, centered on the main technical notions, also instrumental and methodological, analyzed from a creative and also strategic point of view. At the end of this block, students will have acquired competences to develop their own stylistic identity, which will be applied during the practical phase at the workshops. This course has a strong practical nuance that intends to increase students’ creativity and their own style, from the idea to the production of the final product.
The course is organized in modules that include a practical part in workshops, visits, working teams and conferences by professionals, alternated with the project block and work revision. In each module there will be a test of acquired knowledge and competences.
The master is addressed to graduates in disciplines related to design, fine arts, social sciences, as well as graduates and professionals from different fields interested in being introduced professionally in the fashion design sector.
The professional career that students can develop after taking this course is closely related to their previous training and expertise, which will enrich and broaden their professional opportunities in fashion.
Students who take this course will capable of bringing added value with their professional experience in design companies and studios, multidisciplinary work teams, or as independent designers undertaking their own ventures.

Each Master is assessed by a specialist in the area, who has an active role in the studies plan development and contents in collaboration with the didactics department of the Master Area. The coordinator also supports the incorporation of specific teachers of the sector, as well as the relationships with enterprises and institutions from the knowledge area of the course
Francesc Grau Tomàs
He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Fashion Design by the University of Southampton through Escola d’Arts i Tècniques de la Moda de Barcelona, and also a Master in Fashion Design by Domus Academy of Milan. Since 1994 he has been Creative Director of his own brand: Menchen Tomàs. During the last years he has also been product director for the brand Josep Font, coordinator and director of woman collections for Antonio Miró, and designer in leather shoes and accessories collection for Diego della Valle, TOD´S y HOGAN in Italy.

1 Didactics planning for all IED Master courses is ruled by criteria defined by the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). IED Master adopts a credit system which maintains the structure of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). IED Master solely issues schools’ private titles.
Timetable: Monday – Thursday, from 18.30 to 22.30. There will be lessons some Fridays.
