ENVIROMENTAL DESIGN – SPECIALIZATION IN SUSTAINABLE URBAN DESIGN – LANDSCAPE DESIGN
Start date: April 2011 | Duration: 12 months | Language: English
The Master course aims at training two professional profiles in the environmental design scope: an architect expert in sustainability, in reference to construction, and urban layout (Urban course of study), and a landscape architect, expert in re-territorialisation processes or territorial requalification and design (Landscape course of study). In both cases, the Master course aims at training designers capable of facing the complexity of the contemporary world through a new ecological perspective, i.e. a perspective able to promote new relationships between built and natural landscape, between buildings and energy resources, between places of consumption and of production, between public and private spaces, between spaces and inhabitants, between human beings and other living species.
As a matter of fact, if the challenge of the new millennium is to produce architectures, cities and landscapes that are able to work in a new way by supporting life and a peaceful coexistence on our planet, it is necessary to train a new generation of designers who can plan and realize a universe of architectures, cities and landscapes, not only energetically efficient but also able to self-produce - locally and without harmful wastes - the energy necessary to their operation, as well as exchanging energy and information in a circuit of systematic relations that positively connect natural and built environment, spaces and inhabitants.
The Master course is addressed to engineers, architects, town planners, designers, graduates in Academy of Fine Arts, in history of Art, landscape designers and professionals working in the field who want to develop further skills.
The Master courses in Sustainable Urban design and Landscape consist of a shared preliminary section of study that aims at creating theoretical and practical skills concerning the concepts of sustainability, ecology, territory, ecological footprint, renewable energy, history of the city and of the territory, environmental planning principles, sustainable management of mobility and waters, urban agriculture. The technical part of the Master course in Sustainable Urban Design regards mainly the abilities in planning renewable energy equipment and analyzing buildings and urban systems at a thermo-fluid dynamic level, developing a design method based on an energy conscious approach. The design studio includes the planning of a zero-emissions district with a system of on-site water phytodepuration and productive ground for urban agriculture, i.e. a model district that works as an urban ecosystem. The technical part of Landscape Design concerns abilities in botany, geography and landscape history and design as well as notions of contemporary art and aesthetic. By considering the general loss of shape and structure of the city as well as of the countryside, the design studio will develop integrated strategies to re-create the relationship between human beings and territory, to rebuild the urban continuity and the energy self-sufficiency of a community, i.e. it will define strategies for a new sustainable development (or for a new form of garden) starting from the special characteristics of the local contests. The Master course includes both theoretical and laboratory lessons. Through an interdisciplinary approach with educational modules on architecture, sociology, biology and engineering as well as real design projects, the master develops proficiency in systematic thinking and design, offering designers an innovative experience, advantageous both for small scale structures and the city’s large scale.
This Master is realized in partnership with the Italian National Institute of Architecture (IN/ARCH), an institution recognized by the MIUR (Italian Ministry of Universities and Research) as Special Scientific Institute according to the D.M. 8 October 1996 n.623.
