O Mestrado em Liderança Organizacional combina uma formação geral em liderança de organizações com um foco em liderança em serviços específicos e no setor público.

  • The programme, the only one of its kind in Scotland, brings together people from early childhood, schools, higher education, adult education and public service agencies through common leadership programmes.
  • The personal study course enables you to negotiate a specific programme of study over one semester, which may include internships or the completion of specific research for a community organisation.
  • The flexible delivery of the programme through intensive teaching and extensive online support means you would only need to be based in Glasgow for a limited number of teaching days.
Programme overview

MSc
: 12 months full-time; 24 months part-time

You will take three compulsory courses, an optional course (selected from six options) and a dissertation. The programme offers intensive teaching days supported by substantial documentation on the University’s virtual learning environment Moodle.

You will get an insight into the differing leadership perspectives of your fellow students as well as an opportunity to develop your own specialised interest areas with individually oriented courses. Your progress through the programme will be immediately applicable in your real-life role.

Who is the programme for?

The purpose of the MSc in Organisational Leadership is to provide participants who work in human services, such as education, health, welfare or social services with a unique opportunity to complete a programme that is both comprehensive and tailored to individual needs. The programme enables people from different leadership orientations to work together to enable useful discussions about their own leadership experiences, but also to foster interagency communications and interactions. The programme is unique in the sense that it will bring together people from early childhood, schools, higher education, adult education and public service agencies through common leadership programmes, but also allow them to follow and develop ideas within specific interest areas with individually oriented courses and supervised study. Upon completion of the programme, participants will be able to graduate with a degree with six unique pathways as below:

  • MSc in Organisational Leadership (School Leadership)
  • MSc in Organisational Leadership (Higher Education)
  • MSc in Organisational Leadership (Adult and Community Leadership)
  • MSc in Organisational Leadership (Children’s Services)
  • MSc in Organisational Leadership (Public Service)

Core courses

Understanding Leadership

40 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)

This course will be offered through four modules. The first module of the course will consider the various approaches to leadership, the second will consider various theories and styles of leadership, the third will focus on the various situational pressures and demands confronting educational leaders when managing their organisations, the key workplace processes on which they rely to accomplish their responsibilities, and the personal and organisational consequences associated with leading learning-oriented changes. The final module will provide students with the opportunity to also consider how a range of social issues shape these dimensions for individual leaders’.

Introduction to Educational & Social Research

20 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)

This course is an introduction to educational and social research. The overall aim of the course is to provide students with a fundamental level of research literacy. The aims of the course are:
  • introduce students to current concerns in the philosophy and political economy of research
  • provide students with experience in reading and critically reviewing research
  • prepare students to conduct a research project of appropriate scope
  • inform students about the intersections between method, methodology and approaches to enquiry
  • ensure that students have the preparation they need for further study of research methods and methodology
  • develop understanding of applying enquiry methods to a specific problem
Personal Study
20 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to experience leadership in practice and to interact with leaders as a mechanism for developing their own research. Students will be provided real-life opportunity to make informed decisions, exhibit ethical behaviour, and provide evidence of being a capable professional. The emphasis in this course is on the use of reflection on action and reflection in action, coupled with critical thinking and ethical judgment. The student and the tutor will negotiate an individual learning experience for the student based on the student’s needs.

Optional course Leadership in Context
40 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)

This course will be divided into three modules, the first of which considers issues of organisational leadership within local human service contexts and ways in which leaders can establish partnerships with other agencies to provide a comprehensive approach to the delivery of higher education services, the second will consider the impact of globalisation, international comparative studies and how other countries might approach similar issues related to the leadership and management of higher education organisations. The final module will enable students to focus on their area of specific interest, selected from School leadership, Higher Education Leadership, Public Service Leadership, Adult and Community
Leadership, Childhood Practice Leadership and Children’s Services Leadership.

Dissertation

60 credits at masters level 11 (SCQF)

The dissertation is your chance to design, conduct, analyse, and write up a piece of original empirical research. The topic will be chosen in discussion with your allocated supervisor. The total report will be 18,000-20,000 words.
